What is IMO Part 7, 8, and 9?

Applied Lab offers three parts of IMO testing, parts 7, 8, and 9. What is IMO testing and what do these parts entail?

IMO testing is a fire test procedure to evaluate the flammability of chosen fabrics in drapery, bedding, and upholstery applications to enhance the fire safety provisions onboard commercial ships.

IMO Part 7: Drapery (Vertical) Flammability
Used to classify drapery materials for use on commercial boats traveling in international waters. Specimens are subjected to increasing levels of ignition until the ignition is sustained.

IMO Part 8: Upholstery Flammability
Used to classify upholstery materials for use on commercial boats traveling in international waters. Specimens are subjected to a smoldering cigarette and a 20s, 35mm flame ignition source.

IMO Part 9: Bedding Flammability
Used to classify bedding materials for use on commercial boats traveling in international waters. Specimens are subjected to a smoldering cigarette and a 20s, 35mm flame ignition source.
